Today marks World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims, a moment when we come together to honour all those killed or seriously injured on our roads. First founded by RoadPeace in 1993, WDR has grown into a global day of reflection, solidarity, and renewed commitment to safer roads.
Since 1993, millions of lives have been taken by road traffic crashes. Each loss represents a loved one who never returned home a parent, a child, a friend, a colleague. The impact ripples endlessly through families and communities, leaving deep and lasting scars.
This day gives space for remembrance, but it also serves as a powerful reminder that road deaths are not inevitable. RoadPeace has long championed the belief that with stronger action, better design, accountability, and a culture that prioritises safety, countless lives can be saved.
How people marked this day
Across the country and beyond, people honoured victims in meaningful and personal ways:
-
Attending remembrance services and gatherings organised by communities and RoadPeace.
-
Creating personal acts of remembrance โ lighting candles, placing flowers, or holding a minuteโs silence in memory of loved ones.
-
Sharing messages of support and solidarity on social media using #WDR2025 and tagging @RoadPeace, helping raise awareness and amplify the call for safer roads.
Honouring the past, demanding a safer future
While the day is deeply emotional for many, it also strengthens our collective resolve. We remember those weโve lost, we stand alongside those living with grief, and we continue to push for change so that no more families must endure such preventable tragedy.
Today, and every day, we honour their memory and we call for safer roads for everyone.
