Line of Duty detective sends words of encouragement to real-life police officer

The Andy Cox 200km got a real boost on its penultimate day when Line of Duty’s DI Kate Fleming sent a message of support to DCS Andy Cox, who is nearing the end of his gruelling 200km running challenge which is raising money for RoadPeace.

The fictional police detective from the popular BBC drama series, played by actress Vicky McClure, recorded the message for real-life Detective Chief Superintendent Andy Cox, who is on day eight of his mammoth nine-day fundraiser.

Referring to herself as DI Fleming, she says: “I hear you’re doing an incredible challenge for RoadPeace and have already raised thousands and thousands of pounds for an incredibly important charity.

“Sending much love, congratulations, all the best with the rest of the challenge and thank you for everything you’re doing.”

Det Chief Supt Cox, who is Head of Crime at Lincolnshire Police, is taking part in the ambitious event during Global Road Safety Week, which runs from May 17-23, 2021. He has already raised £38k of his £50k target.

The senior police officer, who is the national lead for fatal collision investigation, reporting to the National Police Chiefs’ Council, began the event in Crystal Palace Park, on Saturday, at the scene of the UK’s first ever road death.

He will complete the event tomorrow at the National Memorial Arboretum, in Staffordshire, which provides a symbolic and comforting place for bereaved families and where RoadPeace has a memorial woodland.

The route is taking him through a number of UK counties where fellow police officers, road safety professionals and RoadPeace members have joined in either cheering him on or covering some of the distance alongside him.
