The RoadPeace Andy Cox Challenge 2022: Routes and Daily Themes

Day One - Monday May 16

Area: Isle of Wight

Details: 25 miles cycling / 5 miles running

Main theme: Crash not accident – Challenging the language we use & media reporting

Suggested focus for forces: Raising awareness around UK national annual road death and injury figures – Five people killed and more than 60  seriously injured, on average, every day.


 

Day Two - Tuesday May 17

Area: Sussex

With Chief Constable Jo Shiner, National Police Chiefs’ Council lead for Roads Policing

Details: 20 miles cycling / 10 miles running

Start time: 10am

Start and finish location: Lewes Police HQ

Main theme: Speeding and 20mph zones

Suggested focus for forces: Linking in with schools to represent the number of people seriously injured and/or killed on the roads in your county in 2020 (Data will be provided to all forces).


 

Day Three - Wednesday May 18

Area: London

With Jeremy Vine, BBC Radio and Channel 5 presenter

Details: 30 miles cycling

Start time: 2:30pm (to leave for 3.00pm) 

Start location: TfL Palestra House, London 

Finish location: Same as start (circular route)

Main theme: Road crime reporting – Widespread use of dashcam

Suggested focus for forces: Promoting ‘Operation Snap’ initiative or similar: Drive like you’re being filmed, because these days you most probably are


 

Day Four - Thursday May 19

Area: Lincolnshire

Details: 25 miles cycling / 5 miles running

Start time: 10.30am

Start and finish location: Lincoln Police HQ

Main theme: Manufacturers and insurers

Suggested focus for forces: Call to manufacturers (Vehicle safety first, performance second) and call to insurers (Incentivise safe driving)


 

Day Five - Friday May 20

Area: Sheffield

Details: 30 miles cycling

Start time: 10.00am

Start location: Hellaby

End: TBC (but in Sheffield City Centre)

Main theme: Legislation – Exceptional hardship and roadside justice

Suggested focus for forces: Link in with local road victims and their families, if possible, who have been affected by the above.


 

Day Six - Saturday May 21

Area: Manchester

Details: 30 miles cycling

Start time: 10.00

Start location: Hope Village

End location: GMP Manchester

Main theme: Active travel

Suggested focus for forces: Link in with cycling groups, communities, horse riders, walking clubs


 

Day Seven - Sunday May 22

Area: Staffordshire

Details: 20 miles cycling / 10 miles running

Start time: 10am

Start location: TBC

End location: The National Memorial Arboretum 

Main theme: Parliamentarians – Take road death more seriously

Suggested focus for forces: Can a local MP read out the names of all of the people killed in your county in a year?
