Myles Cummins, RoadPeace London’s Victims’ Voice Campaigner, shares his blog below on insights and reflections on a recent Victims’ Listening Session, where bereaved families and seriously injured road users had the opportunity to speak directly to London’s key transport decision-makers.
The afternoon of 21st of October brought together a variety of significant stakeholders and decision makers in London for a Victims’ Listening Session, with bereaved families and seriously injured victims having the opportunity to share their lived experience to the most important transport heads in the capital.
Sir Sadiq Khan, the Mayor of London, flanked by both his deputy Mayor for Transport and Policing and Crime respectively, was in attendance to hear first-hand what RoadPeace members had to say about their ordeal and what needed to be done to reduce danger on our roads.
The Mayor kicked off the session with a rousing speech about the importance of Vision Zero, the city-wide aim of no road deaths by 2041, and how hearing from those who have suffered from road crash helps to inform and support this policy, with the aim that no death is needlessly caused on our streets.
Our 12 victims in attendance bravely advocated for meaningful change that is needed across London to achieve the aim of Vision Zero over the course of the afternoon, with the stakeholders and local politicians absorbing the detail of a series of answers about victims’ treatment immediately post-crash and since. This clearly resonated with those listening, and the effect of sharing what still needs improving across the city has struck a considerable chord with those who have the power to enact this change.
The impact has been felt across the major institutions in London, including the Mayor’s office, the MPS (Metropolitan Police Service) and the GLA (Greater London Authority. In the brief time since the session took place, there have been some exciting developments in the works which have been announced by our partners, which we will be able to share with you in the coming weeks.
The success and the influence of events like these just go to show what can happen when we come together to share our stories. We can create shockwaves at the highest levels of government, and RoadPeace will continue to create these opportunities with victims to ensure that all who want to speak out are heard.
