Sergeant Mike Templeman will embark on an extraordinary 49-mile ultra-marathon next month, to honour the memory of those who tragically lost their lives on Lincolnshire’s roads in 2023.
Each mile symbolises a life taken too soon – a total of 49 lives – and the event, which will take place on November 16, will raise funds for RoadPeace, the national charity for road crash victims.
This challenge follows Mike’s inspiring run last year, where he covered 48 miles for the 48 people killed on Lincolnshire roads in 2022, raising £4,281 for RoadPeace and Brake. Deeply moved by the stories shared by the bereaved families, Mike – a Gainsborough Response Sergeant – was motivated to take on the ultra-marathon once again.
“Running in memory of those lost is a truly humbling experience,” said Mike. “We must collectively do more to make our roads safer. In my 22 years of service, I’ve seen the devastation road fatalities cause. If this run can help raise awareness about the Fatal Five offences – speeding, distraction, drink/drug driving, carelessness and not wearing a seatbelt – then every mile will be worth it.”
Mike’s run will take place at Yarborough Leisure Centre in Lincoln, where he will complete 197 laps of the 400-metre track, totalling the 79-kilometre (49-mile) distance.
The epic event will take place the day before World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims on 17th November, further amplifying the message of road danger reduction and remembrance.
Throughout the campaign, messages about the Fatal Five will be shared, reminding the public how addressing these dangerous driving behaviours could significantly reduce road fatalities and serious injuries.
RoadPeace, the charity at the heart of Mike’s fundraising effort, plays a crucial role in supporting those affected by road collisions and advocating for safer roads. Donations can be made to support Mike’s ultra-marathon and RoadPeace’s work via his JustGiving page: Mike’s JustGiving.
Supporters are welcome to join on the day, either to cheer Mike on or even to run a lap or two alongside him. You can also follow his progress and help spread the word on social media: @LincsPolice and @SgtTempo, using the hashtag #MikesRoadSafetyAwarenessUltra.
Mike’s dedication to road safety extends beyond this event. Last December, he created a video titled “Delivering the Message” in which he shared the heartbreaking experience of informing families that their loved one is not coming home. Having delivered this news far too often, Mike’s passion for preventing road fatalities drives his determination to make this run count.
