“I can honestly say this was one of the best walks of my life” – Ashleigh
This month we are celebrating the outstanding efforts of Ashleigh Clennell, and her neighbour, Rox, who undertook a 34-mile walk in memory of Ashleigh’s brother, James, who was killed in a crash on 20th June 2011 when he was just 16-years-old.
Ashleigh and Rox set off from James’ grave in Bennington just after 4am and finished the walk at 8pm outside Stamford Bridge – home of Chelsea FC, the team James passionately supported. Their heartfelt tribute not only honoured James’ memory but also highlighted the enduring impact of road crashes on families and communities.
Ashleigh and Rox raised an astounding £2,475 on JustGiving, and around £300 more in cash donations. These funds will make a real difference, helping us to deliver our vital support services to families in need. Their JustGiving page is still live, if you would like to show your support for Ashleigh and Rox.
We want to say a huge thank you to Ashleigh, Rox and everyone who supported them for a moving and hugely successful fundraiser.
Ashleigh asked us to share the following tribute to her brother, James:
“My big brother James, it feels like yesterday you were taken from us and killed in that car crash and I struggle to comprehend that it has been over 13 years since I last saw your beautiful face and smile. Last Friday, 2nd of August, we should have celebrated your 30th birthday with you, but instead I did a 34-mile walk in your memory from your grave in Hertfordshire to your favourite football club ground, Chelsea in London.
“As I reflect on the years that we have missed out on, I still hold on to the first 15 years of my life that I shared with you. The memories that we made, and the laughter we had I will forever cherish. You had the cheekiest grin, the most infectious laugh and were my constant comfort and reassurance that everything was going to be ok. As I reflect on these moments, I realise how much your presence shaped my childhood and my life.
“The loss of you is a wound that will never fully heal, but these memories of our early years together are a balm that soothes the pain. I live every day with the same unyielding zest that you had for life. I hope to honour you as best as I can and every step I take I know you are there guiding me. My big bro, I love you, I miss you and I hope I make you proud.”
Ashleigh’s much-loved brother, James
