Finding support » Practical information for the bereaved » Criminal prosecution » Making a victim personal statement
RoadPeace have been encouraging victims to write impact statements and to provide them to the court hearing in the case against the driver responsible. Most families have found this worthwhile and felt that the court was made aware of the effect on their lives and their feelings (even if the verdict and/or sentence were not as they would have wanted). The impact statement also gives a balance to the defence plea in mitigation, when the defence explains the feelings of the defendant and how a prison sentence or disqualification would affect their lives.
