Cycling and walking
We know that safer streets result not only in fewer road deaths and injuries, but also create an environment which is less intimidating and polluted and where people are more likely to walk and cycle.
Walking and cycling are safe, environmentally friendly and healthy forms of travel and should be promoted and encouraged.
Reducing the volume and speed of motorised vehicles and giving priority to walking and cycling modes of travel in both street design and traffic laws and enforcement are vital for this modal shift.
The UK Commission for Integrated Transport said in 2001 that 20mph area wide limits are considered to be 'the one critical success factor underpinning best practice in promoting walking, cycling and public transport as alternatives to the private car'.
