Fair compensation
The problem
- No amount of money can compensate for the loss of a loved one.
- Our compensation system is fault based, which discriminates against cyclists and pedestrians.
- There is age discrimination in our bereavement damages system. Too many young unmarried adults are killed in collisions and their parents, often unable to work for long periods of time, are unable to claim any financial compensation.
- There is a lack of transparency with civil compensation claims and settlements. The vast majority are settled out of court.
What RoadPeace wants
- The burden of proof reversed in injury collisions involving vulnerable road users.
- Bereaved damages extended to cover victims of all ages.
- Interim payments for claimants
- Rehabilitation services improved and counselling services extended to the bereaved.
- Better monitoring and more openness of claims
What RoadPeace is doing about it
- Campaigning for Stricter Liability to be introduced. This includes giving presentations on this at the RoSPA conference February 2010.
- Responding to consultations on bereavement damages, working with solicitors and also informing victims
